Detailed answers to the 20 most common questions about Tody.
Tody is a secure Indian communication and social media platform built by TACHY EDTECH PRIVATE LIMITED. It combines private chat, microblogging, local marketplace (TODY Local), group tasks, HD voice/video calls, and a Business Messaging API — all hosted in India under Indian data laws. Tody is designed as an India-first alternative to fragmented global platforms, bringing chat, social media, commerce, and business communication into one unified app.
Yes. The Tody consumer platform — including private chat, group chat, microblogging, local marketplace, group tasks, and HD voice/video calls — is completely free during beta and will remain free for core consumer features. Businesses and enterprises that use the Business Messaging API pay transparent per-message pricing starting at Rs. 0.25 per business message. There are no hidden charges, no data mining, and no advertising.
Creating a Tody account is simple and takes under a minute. Visit chat.tody.in/app/login, select the Sign up tab, enter your email address, choose a username, and set a password. No phone number is required. You can also download the Android beta app from the Tester page. Once registered, you can log in from any browser or the Android app.
Yes. Tody is available on Android via the beta programme — download from the Tester page or Google Play Store. You can also access Tody Web from any mobile or desktop browser at chat.tody.in/app/login for a full-featured experience. iOS support is on the product roadmap and will be announced when available.
Tody takes security seriously. Private one-to-one chats use end-to-end encryption — only you and the recipient can read the messages. All data in transit is protected with TLS encryption, and data at rest is encrypted on Indian servers. Tody never sells user data to third parties. The platform follows Indian IT Act compliance and implements DPDP-aware privacy practices. For detailed security information, see the Security page.
The Tody Business API is a REST API for businesses, schools, and enterprises to send automated messages — transactional updates, OTPs, marketing campaigns, payment reminders, order notifications, and parent communication. Pricing is transparent at Rs. 0.25 per business message with wallet-based billing. Businesses get API keys with scoped permissions, template management, campaign tools, webhook delivery events, and full audit logging. Enterprise plans with dedicated support and custom SLAs are also available. See the Pricing page for full details.
Tody voice and video calls deliver HD quality using WebRTC technology, optimised specifically for Indian network conditions. Calls work reliably across 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, and Wi-Fi connections. A low-bandwidth mode automatically adjusts quality on slower networks to maintain connection stability. Both one-to-one and group calls are supported, with no time limits and no charges.
Yes! Unlike WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and most other chat apps, Tody does not require a phone number at all. You can sign up with just an email address and choose a username. This protects your privacy by not tying your identity to a mobile number, and makes Tody one of the few Indian platforms that offers this level of privacy by default.
Tody's microblogging platform includes: creating text and media posts (up to 10 attachments), following users, liking posts, reposting (sharing), quote posting (sharing with your commentary), trending hashtags, chronological feeds (no algorithm manipulation), content discovery and exploration, full-text search, post analytics (views, engagement), interactive polls, threaded posts for long-form content, customisable profiles, follower counts, and free verified badges for authentic accounts. For a full breakdown, visit the microblogging page.
TODY Local is Tody's built-in hyperlocal marketplace where users can buy and sell items within their community. List items with photos, descriptions, and prices. Browse by category and location. Chat directly with buyers or sellers using Tody's in-app messaging — no need to share phone numbers. All marketplace communications and transactions stay within Tody's Indian servers. TODY Local is integrated into the full Tody social media platform.
Tody groups support up to 500 members with rich features: group chat with media sharing, admin controls and permissions, pinned messages and announcements, group HD voice and video calls, group task management (create, assign, track tasks within groups), group-specific privacy settings, and a shared media gallery. Groups are ideal for families, friend circles, work teams, housing societies, class groups, and community organisations.
Tody supports file sharing up to 100 MB per file. You can share documents (PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT), images (JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP), videos (MP4, MOV), compressed archives (ZIP, RAR), and other common formats. All uploaded files are scanned for malware and stored securely on Indian servers. Shared files remain available in the chat or group media gallery for easy access later.
Yes. Tody uses multiple layers of encryption: private one-to-one chats are end-to-end encrypted (only sender and recipient can read messages); all data in transit uses TLS 1.3 encryption; data at rest is encrypted on Indian servers; and group chats use server-side encryption with strict access controls. Tody's encryption practices are designed to meet enterprise security requirements while maintaining a fast user experience.
Tody offers free verified badges for public figures, creators, brands, businesses, schools, and institutions. Verification confirms that an account is authentic and belongs to the claimed individual or organisation. To request verification, contact the team through the Contact page with proof of identity (website link, official document, or existing verified social media profile) and a brief description of why verification is needed. Unlike Twitter/X, Tody verification is free — it's about authenticity, not payment.
All Tody user data — messages, media files, posts, profile information, call records, marketplace listings, task data, and business API records — is stored exclusively in Indian data centres. Indian data residency means your data is physically located in India, subject to Indian jurisdiction, and protected by Indian law (IT Act, proposed DPDP Act). No user data is transferred outside India without explicit consent. This is a core differentiator from platforms like Facebook, Twitter/X, Telegram, and Signal, which store Indian user data on global servers under foreign jurisdiction.
Tody offers several key advantages over WhatsApp: no phone number required (sign up with email), full Indian data residency (WhatsApp has partial India storage), built-in microblogging, local marketplace, group tasks, chronological feed, no data mining, and a native Business REST API without depending on third-party BSPs. WhatsApp has a much larger global user base. Many users and businesses run both platforms. For a detailed comparison, see Tody vs WhatsApp Business.
For general support: email info@tody.in. For business and enterprise inquiries: use the Contact page. For reporting abuse or inappropriate content: use the in-app report feature or email with details. Tody's support team is based in India and operates during Indian business hours. Response time is typically within 24 hours for email. Business API and Enterprise customers receive priority support.
Yes, Tody's Business Messaging API is purpose-built for customer communication. Use cases include: transactional notifications (order confirmations, shipping updates), OTP and verification messages, payment reminders and receipts, marketing campaigns (promotions, offers, announcements), customer support replies, school-parent communication (fees, attendance, results), and internal team alerts. Features include REST API with scoped keys, template management with approval workflows, campaign tools, wallet billing with GST invoices, webhook delivery lifecycle events, and full audit logging.
Currently, the Tody app interface and customer support are available in English and Hindi. Support for additional Indian languages — including Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, and Malayalam — is actively planned on the product roadmap. Users can chat and post content in any language; the platform supports Unicode text for all Indian scripts.
Tody follows transparent content moderation practices based on published community guidelines, compliant with Indian IT Act requirements. Users can report inappropriate content, spam, harassment, or violations directly in the app. Unlike platforms that practice shadow-banning (silently reducing a user's reach without notification), Tody provides clear reasons when content is moderated or accounts are restricted. Users have an appeal process available. Moderators are trained on Indian legal and cultural context. For full details, see the Security page.
